Whether you are working from home couple days a week, run your business, study, or just need a place to schedule your day and pay the bills – you would want a comfortable, stylish and productive work space to have in place. Simply because in a well-designed and organized home office, which you enjoy being at, you would likely spend more time, you would fulfill more tasks and still be happy and not exhausted in the end of the day. Sound like a good plan?

Let me share with you some Tips for creating a stylish and practical Home office.

  1. First of all think about your working habits and then choose the best place for your office. I would recommend to designate a room if it is possible, no matter how you can withstand distractions, a separate room is the best. If it is not possible, still do not sacrifice space trying to squeeze your working space between kitchen and dining room. You’ll likely spend a lot of time in your home office so it should be comfortable.
  2. Your desk and shelves should be functional first and then beautiful. Think about your work and what you need in your office – how much storage, how big the table, what is the technology you use. If you are just starting your business and have no idea what to expect – buy a simple table – just legs with the working surface and then you could add storage cabinets, drawer units and shelves by the time when you need it.

  1. Invest in your chair. It should be The Chair. It is obvious – a beautiful, ergonomically-correct, comfortable seat is worth every dime. And your back will thank you 😉
  1. Consider lighting. Make sure your office has plenty of light. A good working lamp with adjustable head is what you need.

  1. Make yourself a beautiful view when you glance up from the computer. The best is to sit in front of the window with natural light, but if it is not possible, hang a pretty picture above the table, it could be a family portrait, inspirational quote or something that would give you positive vibes.
  2. Choose pretty accessories. Anything that aligns with your style, color and mood. Colorful pencil holders, fancy paper trays, pretty notepads and sticky notes. Or go minimal in monochrome color scheme for a trendy Nordic style home office.

  1. Your technology can also be stylish. Nowadays it is beautiful itself (I have a golden printer for example), but do not forget to hide unsightly cords. Make sure your equipment is close to power outlets and easy to access.

  1. Keep it clean and organized. Do not forget to eliminate clutter – in a well-designed home office, where everything has its place and function, you should not have a problem of piling stuff.  If you keep struggling with excessive papers and files, reconsider your storage. Maybe you should add floating shelving or additional drawer unit under you table. Add a pin board where you can pin you schedule and to-do lists, make it colourful and inspiring.

  1. And one more magical tip from me – in the North-East part of your home office make a special altar for your business. It is not necessary to be something religious. It should be your thing. Maybe some crystals, candles, icons, or your favorite special items, put them on a tray or on the table, where you would see it. Then use the altar to regenerate your powers, spend some time every day in a prayer or meditation and set your intention for the day. Taking this time to calm your mind and let inspiration come will be one of the most important practices you can incorporate into your business and life.
